Upping Your Game
Cleaning is the name of the game in this issue of Controlled Environments. We tee off on this topic with our cover story, “Developing Your Cleaning Scorecard” by Mike Jones. He jokingly notes that his first recommendation in selecting a new cleaning system is to find someone else to do the job. Failing that, he offers a very practical
and usable approach to making the process manageable. He
makes a case that the total cost per part cleaned, not the cost
per liter of solvent, is the right metric to base a decision. The
checklist included with the article shows the list of items and
the scope required in making a smart assessment. Taking the time to go through
the steps of the process maximizes the potential to select an option that minimizes
In another article on cleaning, Wendy Hollands and Jay Postlewaite took a careful
look at corrosion of stainless steel caused by bleach. Even though it’s known to cause
damage to stainless steel surfaces over time, bleach is still used because of its ability
to kill a wide spectrum of microbes. Not only stainless steel equipment, plastic surfaces can also be affected by continued use. The article shows the results of testing
and observations comparing the use of NaDCC solutions to diluted bleach solutions.
The outcome indicates that changes in the disinfectant rotation can extend the life of
The Contamination Control In and Out of the Cleanroom column, by Barbara
Kanegsberg and Ed Kanegsberg, addresses the purchase of a cleaning system. They
may not have seen it all when it comes to how purchasing decisions are made but
they’ve seen quite a bit—including equipment chosen because it matched the décor.
While we assume that you would never do this, there are other less obvious mistakes
to avoid. They encourage a look beyond capital costs to total cost of ownership. In
addition, they recommend a close look at both the equipment and the vendor to be
sure you have support after the purchase.
The In & Out column provides a good introduction to the company profiles that
are included with this issue. Clean and controlled environments are a highly specialized breed of workplace. Finding product and service providers who know the
market, the regulations, and understand the nature of work in a cleanroom can give
you a valuable partner in many aspects of operations. A good working relationship
with knowlegeable suppliers can make your job a little less stressful. Look through
this section and learn more about familiar companies and perhaps find a few that are
new and interesting to you.
This issue is rounded out with articles on LIMS in the food and beverage industry,
new regulations in the biotech sector, the ever-present need for microbial monitoring, and hazardous production materials.
Golfer Jerry Barber is credited with saying, “The more I practice, the luckier I get.”
Putting some of the advice and guidance in this issue into practice won’t improve
your golf swing but may improve your cleaning score.
