HOW IT WORKS March/April 2016 • www.cemag.us
Problem: Nearly all readers would likely agree
that the most important roles of a cleanroom designer
or specifier involve sourcing and implementing the
latest technology and equipment to ensure worker
safety and the anticipated level of performance of
their facility. While traditionally helping fulfill both
of these objectives, critical performance ergonomic
seating has undergone relatively minor improvements
over past decades when compared to strides made in
computerization, filtration, personal protective gear,
power supplies, and most other aspects of today’s
cleanroom.
Solution: MVMT seating from BioFit Engineered Products is designed to address task-specific
user range of motion in current critical performance
applications. Developed in collaboration with Studio
Fifield of Milan, Italy, it was created for use in the technology, laboratory, healthcare and industrial sectors.
The line is comprised of two series — Pro and Tech,
with cleanroom performance packages available
in Pro series configurations. The line
combines technical precision and
durability with a design aesthetic not
normally associated with traditional
technical workspaces.
MVMT seating offers an intuitive
user experience featuring what may be
the first self-regulating weight activation control in a non-office chair. Specifically, the weight-activated control
not only adjusts to the primary user’s
movements, but also automatically
fine-tunes itself to other users of
various sizes and weights, sensing
their individual support needs from
the moment they sit down. This results
in improved user range of motion and
comfort, and alleviates time spent readjusting settings between shifts or
after use by another person. MVMT
controls also include synchronous
backrest and seat movement,
and provide the ability to lock
out any movement in the chair
that could interfere with the
22
most precise work. Functions are controlled via knobs
and slides under the seat pan and armrests, respectively, and include forward seat tilt for close-up and
repetitive work such as microscopy, microtension control, synchronized seat and backrest tilting functions,
non-ratcheting backrest height and backrest forward/
rearward adjustments. MVMT seating also includes
resistance casters and a height-adjustable foot ring. All
control functions are available in standing-height and
critical environment configurations.
The advanced ergonomic functionality of MVMT
combines with a fresh look created to complement interior design trends and enhance the corporate image
of today’s facilities. Aesthetics are a critical differentiator when it comes to attracting and retaining top
talent, and the design of MVMT seating varies greatly
varies from alternatives that utilize designs developed
many years ago.
The MVMT design and functionality represents
a advancement in cleanroom, laboratory, and tech-
nology sector seating over tried-and-true, yet dated,
models in use for the past decades. In addition to cre-
ating a chair for ultra-critical environments including
static-sensitive, particle-free and microbe controlled
areas in pharmaceutical, medical device, genetic re-
search, and other like facilities, MVMT was developed
based on interviews and interaction with
prototypes by top researchers, technicians,
clinicians and other regular, long-time users
of laboratory and tech sector seating. The
result is a design that addresses taller
working heights, different task-specif-
ic postures, repetitive movements,
durability, cleanability, and ease of
use. Further, the MVMT is designed
for 3-shift use, 365 days per year, and
supported by a 13-year warranty.
Since its launch at NeoCon 2014, MVMT
seating is quickly becoming a must-have
in today’s critical performance facility,
earning recognition including
Controlled Environments’ inaugural
Readers’ Choice Award and Best of
NeoCon Innovation Award.
